[Clinical Edge] Should You Try Artificial Tears First If Your Vision Suddenly Becomes Blurry?

If your vision suddenly becomes blurry, it's generally reasonable to try preservative-free artificial tears once or twice, especially if your eyes feel dry. However, if the blurry vision persists, affects only one eye, or is accompanied by other warning signs, you should seek an eye examination without delay.

Dry Eyes Can Cause Temporary Blurry Vision

One of the most common causes of intermittent blurry vision is dry eye disease.

A healthy tear film keeps the surface of the eye smooth and clear. When the tear film becomes unstable, vision may fluctuate or appear blurry. In many cases, blinking several times or using artificial tears temporarily restores clear vision.

When Artificial Tears Are Not Enough

Blurry vision is not always caused by dry eyes. You should not rely on artificial tears alone if you experience:

  • Sudden blurry vision in only one eye
  • Rapid loss of vision
  • Eye pain or significant redness
  • New flashes of light or a sudden increase in floaters
  • A shadow or curtain blocking part of your vision

These symptoms may indicate a more serious eye condition that requires prompt evaluation.

What If Your Vision Stays Blurry?

If your vision remains blurry after using artificial tears, the problem may not simply be dry eye.

Persistent or recurrent blurry vision should be evaluated by an ophthalmologist. Depending on your symptoms, you may need tests such as a slit-lamp examination, a dilated retinal examination, or optical coherence tomography (OCT) to identify the underlying cause.

What Should You Do?

  • Try preservative-free artificial tears if your eyes feel dry and both eyes are affected.
  • If the blurry vision does not improve, arrange an eye examination.
  • If only one eye suddenly becomes blurry or you notice pain, flashes, many new floaters, or a curtain-like shadow, seek urgent ophthalmic care the same day.

Prompt evaluation is important because some causes of sudden blurry vision require immediate treatment to protect your eyesight.
