[Clinical Edge] My Vision Suddenly Became Blurry — Should I Try Artificial Tears First?

If your vision suddenly becomes blurry, it is usually reasonable to try preservative-free artificial tears once or twice, especially if your eyes feel dry or irritated.

However, if the blurriness does not improve, affects only one eye, or comes with other warning signs, you should not delay an eye examination.

Artificial tears may help if dry eye is the cause

One common reason for temporary blurry vision is dry eye disease.

Your tear film helps create a smooth optical surface on the eye. When the tear film becomes unstable, vision can fluctuate and appear blurry.

Artificial tears may temporarily restore a clearer view by improving the tear film.

Dry eye is more likely if:

  • Both eyes become blurry in a similar way
  • Blinking several times improves your vision
  • Your eyes feel dry, gritty, or tired
  • The blurriness improves within minutes after using artificial tears

Do not rely on artificial tears alone in these situations

Blurred vision is not always caused by dry eyes.

You should seek an eye examination if you experience:

  • Sudden blurry vision in only one eye
  • Rapid decrease in vision
  • Eye pain or significant redness
  • New flashes of light or a sudden increase in floaters
  • A shadow, curtain, or missing area in your vision

These symptoms can sometimes be associated with conditions involving the cornea, retina, or eye pressure that require prompt evaluation.

What if artificial tears do not improve my vision?

If your vision remains blurry after using artificial tears, another cause should be considered.

Persistent or repeated blurry vision may require evaluation with:

  • Visual acuity testing
  • Slit-lamp examination
  • Dilated eye examination
  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) when needed

Finding the cause is more important than repeatedly trying eye drops without improvement.

What should you do now?

If both eyes are mildly blurry and your symptoms feel related to dryness:

→ Try preservative-free artificial tears and observe for improvement.

If your vision does not become clearer:

→ Schedule an eye examination.

If you suddenly lose vision in one eye or have pain, flashes, many new floaters, or a curtain-like shadow:

→ Seek urgent eye care.

The key is not whether you can try artificial tears — it is knowing when artificial tears are enough and when your eyes are asking for a closer evaluation.
